ST. JOHN’S, NL — A new rehearsal studio for a popular production company has been approved for downtown St. John’s.
Located at 27 Mayor Avenue, the former Judy Knee dance studio, the building was given the go-ahead for conversion by council at its weekly meeting on Monday.
Councilors approved the nonconforming use request from Terra Bruce Productions – the theater and television company behind the Musical “No change in time”which was performed in front of 15,000 people across the country in 2019.
District 2 Com. Shawn Skinner said the council did not receive any submissions following notification of the application.
“I think area residents would generally be happy with that,” said Skinner, who recommended council approve the application.
The proposed use is a theater studio for rehearsals only, which will replace the former Judy Knee Dance Studio, which first moved into the building in 1981. The building went up for sale in 2018 when Knee, which taught dance for more than four decades, announced that she would be taking semi-retirement.
Terra Bruce Productions’ new rehearsal business will include both offices and rehearsal space. There will be a maximum of 25 members on the site, with no public affairs, customer interaction or public performances. It will operate from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.
The parking of 12 vehicles on site has also been approved by the council.
“It’s great to see there’s more (building) space there for rehearsals and the arts,” the councilman said. said Debbie Hanlon. “I know the city needs it and it’s good to see individuals getting involved.
“It’s a great location. … It will be a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
The Telegram attempted to reach producers Terra Bruce Productions, including Bob Hallett, for a reaction, but messages and calls were not returned on time.
